Cultivating travel experiences that stick is more than just preparing ahead of time for the trip. Here’s a way to highlight learning experiences in the moment or afterwards to draw attention to key memories that connect.

After making a list of places we’ve visited, we shared comparisons to our recent location: Cartagena, Colombia. Some of the connections our kids shared were:
Cartagena is similar to London because they both have soccer stadiums.
Cartagena is the same as Arizona because they are both hot and have pools.
Cartagena is like Amsterdam because our tour guides were not from the country.
Cartagena is different from home because they have motorcycle taxis.
Honestly, this felt more like a game. There’s room for choice and creativity to participate no matter the age-level. Knowing that it also helps them make sense of the world and how we are more alike than different is like icing on the cake!

Our kids benefit from having a daily schedule, so we brought whiteboards that we use at home. But we also used them for activities like this one. The travel whiteboards and colorful, magnetic double-sided markers will remain part of our standard packing list from this point on!
